Anna-Maria Tapaninen has a doctorate in social anthropology, with a dissertation based on ethnographic fieldwork in southern Italy. She has subsequently done archival research on institutionalized infant abandonment in 19th century Europe, Naples in particular. She is currently working as university researcher at the University of Helsinki within the IMMIGENE project on DNA and immigration in Finland.
